Americans as a highly competitive nation just love competition and challenge. Thus sports play a crucial role in the lives of many people. Either they engage in sports activities or they just enjoy their evenings sitting in their comfortable chairs at home, or going to the stadiums and arenas to cheer their favorite team. Many professional athletes became symbols of the American dream and millions of Americans were or still are inspired by their heroes. From the foundation of the U.S.A.

The immigrants were bringing all sorts of games and sports from all around the world, but only a few of them made an impact on the newly found nation. Only a few games, derived from mostly from European countries, became gained the status of national and most popular sports in America. So, these are the most popular sports in America.

Most Popular Sports In America (USA)

American football:

American football could easily be considered as the most popular one. It is also the 9th most popular sport in the world. NFL, the leading and most popular organization for football in America and in the world, is breaking records in the numbers of viewers in the stadiums and as well on TV. Briefly, football is a contact sport played between two teams with eleven players on each side. The team which scores more points, mainly through touchdown, wins. A large number of NFL players made a large impact on American culture. Players like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana and many more are one of the most popular personalities in the U.S.

Baseball Game played with bats, a ball and gloves is one of the most iconic sports in America. Derived from cricket, it is played between two teams composed of nine players. Teams alternate positions as batters (offense) and fielders (defense). Even though America is credited for developing several sports with large fan bases across the country and all around the world, baseball is still considered the national pastime and the most popular sport by many Americans. Its leading organization is MLB, as the strongest, biggest and most popular league in the world.

Talking about the most popular sports in America without mentioning basketball is not possible. Especially because it is the only major sport of strictly U.S. origin, being invented by James Naismith in the 19th century. It is an indoor game played between two teams with five players trying to score more points by tossing the ball through an elevated horizontal hoop called a basket. In the first three decades after World War 2 basketball grew in popularity in America and as well internationally. Especially the ’80s and ’90s were the decades when basketball and NBA established its status as one of the most popular sports in America. With stars like “Magic” Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan the rise of basketball started and continued later with Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, and many others.

Ice Hockey:

Ice Hockey probably the most popular game in Canada, it is also one of the most popular sports in America. Researches suggest that it is derived from a game played by Native Americans in Nova Scotia (called Mi’kmaq) and by the Irish game of Hurley. A game between two teams composed of six players wearing skates. With its speed and its frequent physical contact, it has grown into one of the most popular sports in America, as well as Canada and many European countries as Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden. The strongest competition is the American NHL, composed of teams from the U.S. and Canada. There is a large number of Europeans who made their impact in the NHL such as Saku Koivu, Alex Ovechkin, Kent Nilsson, Nicklas Lidstrom, and many others.

There is, of course, many other popular sports with strong tradition in America like boxing, tennis, golf, auto racing. There are also non-traditional sports growing in popularity in recent years like mixed martial arts, soccer reaching higher and higher numbers of fans in the U.S., especially MMA and the most popular organization UFC with superstars like Connor McGregor, Stipe Miocic, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Alistair Overeem. With its recent growth who knows, maybe UFC will become the most popular sport one day. But for now, these four remain untouched as the most popular sports in America.
